Do you ever stop to think about what brought you here? The moment that led to the instrument you picked up, to the review you read, to the plugin you downloaded, and somehow, you ended up here—on this page.

Inspiration has a way of launching us off on trajectories. Whether it’s down an internet hole or on a career path—when inspiration strikes, it’s always worth following. For us, hearing a sound we love inspires us to learn new techniques and pick up new tools. And that’s when the magic happens: That moment of inspiration mixes with our past experiences and creates something new, something unique.

We all have a moment—a sound, a feeling, a painting, a chord—that propelled us into the creative space. Maybe it’s a poetic story of self-realization, or maybe it was just a mom who made you take piano lessons. Whatever that moment was for you; it’s worth reminding yourself of—because that moment led you to this moment. The “you” you are now, and the creative space you’ve made for yourself along the way.

This month, we’re going back to the beginning—that first moment of inspiration that motivated you to start making. We’ll rediscover the artists and sounds that first inspired us and explore how they’ve helped us better understand ourselves as artists. (And to help you prepare for when inspiration strikes, check out last month’s deep dive into creative techniques.)
